ADVISING AND SUPPORTING (A/S)

Proficient Competency Assessment

As described by ACPA/NASPA (2016), Advising and Supporting (A/S) “addresses the knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to providing advising and support to individuals and groups through direction, feedback, critique, referral, and guidance,” as student affairs practitioners play critical roles in holistic wellness of our students, colleagues, and even ourselves. Knowledge and skills within areas such as interpersonal skills, professional development, group dynamics, partnering with others, conflict and crisis situations, and more contribute to the competency development of A/S. According to ACPA/NASPA (2015, 2016), development and experiential outcomes within A/S include:

  • “Establish rapport with students, groups, colleagues, and others that acknowledges differences in lived experiences” (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 36).

  • “Recognize the strengths and limitations of one’s own worldview on communication with others (e.g., how terminology could either liberate or constrain others with different gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, cultural backgrounds, etc.)” (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 36).

  • “Assess the developmental needs of students and organizational needs of student groups.” (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 37).

  • Develop avenues for student involvement in the promotion and de-stigmatization of diversity issues (e.g., creating student advisory councils, peer education programs, advising student organizations) (ACPA & NASPA, 2015).

Activities and artifacts to fulfill my proficient development within A/S include:

Graduate Assistant, Division of Diversity and Belonging/Office of Title IX

As the graduate assistant in the Division of Diversity and Belonging, as well as Office of Title IX, I had the opportunity to connect with our undergraduate student office assistants. Through this connection, I was able to serve as guidance to them in reviewing personal statements, resumes, cover letters, as our three office assistance were pursuing graduate school and law school. As one of our student office assistants has actually been accepted into BGSU's College Student Personnel program, I would like to believe I was an assistance to them in their journey.

Graduate Advisor, Student Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion (SACODI) within BGSU's Division of Diversity and Belonging

Serve as the Advisor/Chair of the Student Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion (SACODI)

The Student Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion is a student advisory committee designed to provide a platform for undergraduate and graduate student leaders to come together and promote diversity and inclusion at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). SACODI is a subcommittee of the former President’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion (PACODI). As the graduate assistant in the Division of Diversity and Belonging, I advise this advisory committee and meet bi-weekly with council co-chairs and monthly with council members

Graduate Advisor, Front-Line Advisory Group (FLAG) within BGSU's Office of Title IX

The Front-Line Advisory Group (FLAG) is a student advisory group connected to BGSU’s Office of Title IX. FLAG is charged with serving as liaisons between students and the Office of Title IX; providing recommendations to the Title IX Office on a range of issues, such as campus culture; training and educational programming, and processes concerns; and identifying emerging issues related to sexual harassment, sexual violence, and relationship violence. As the graduate assistant for the Division of Diversity and Belonging, as well as Office of Title IX, I advise this advisory committee and meet monthly with council members.
