Biography of Breion Hawkins
From Dayton, Ohio, Breion Hawkins (she/her/hers) is a graduate student in the College Student Personnel program (CSP) at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), receiving her M.A. May 2021. In addition to her role as a graduate student, Breion serves as the Graduate Assistant in BGSU's Division of Diversity and Belonging, as well as Office of Title IX, where she assists with equity and diversity programming, advisory councils, and more! Through undergraduate and graduate practicum opportunities, Breion has experience in residence life, career services, conduct administration and multicultural recruitment. Along with her educational background in student affairs, Breion received her B.S. in Apparel Merchandising and Product Development from BGSU in 2017. From her overall educational and professional experience, Breion has experience in recruitment coordination, student conduct , Title IX initiatives, and diversity and inclusion programming. Breion is passionate about student learning and development, and working towards building sense of belonging in communities.

Outside of her professional life, Breion enjoys sketching, outdoor walks, playing chess, playing The Sims, admiring beauty and style, laughing, and watching random videos on YouTube.

Breion identifies as Black, a woman, first-gen, a learner, a daughter, a niece, a granddaughter, a sister, a significant other, a friend.
WHY STUDENT AFFAIRS?

Entering undergraduate school, Breion desired to pursue apparel merchandising and product development as she wished to become a fashion buyer, merchant, or boutique owner. However, after involvements such as the working as a Career Student Ambassador in Bowling Green State University's Career Center, and serving as a resident advisor on BGSU's campus, Breion grew a liking to helping and assisting students.

In addition to her involvements, as a Black, low-income, first-generation college student at a pre-dominantly White institution, navigating the collegiate experience had its trials and tribulations. Seeking support from services such as TRiO's Student Support Services and joining the McNair scholars program, Breion appreciated the support she received from advisor within these programs and services.
​
With these experiences, along with many others, Breion's appreciation was noticed by friends and mentors who work in the field of student affairs, and she was encouraged to pursue the field.
​
After learning about the field, Breion decided student affairs seemed to be a fitting field, following her new found interest in helping and advocating for students. With this, she made the decision to pursue student affairs after graduating with her bachelors and completing a completing a gap-year.

Upon finding her interest in student affairs, Breion researched various graduate schools and graduate programs. This included conducting informational interviews with faculty and staff, visiting different programs, and talking among peers; ultimately, resulting in pursuing graduate school at her undergraduate institution, Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Here's some reasons to why Breion chose to pursue student affairs at BGSU:
Assistantship Offers: Out of the schools and programs Breion visited, she believed BGSU had some of the best assistantship opportunities ​
Program Reputation: While visiting other schools, it was often that Breion was asked "You go to Bowling Green? BGSU has an amazing student affairs program. What are you doing here?"
